After a long day of shows, Chromeo takes over to finish off the night. “It sounds like the Lords of funk are here, and we’re gonna give you some Bonafide Lovin,” boasts frontman Dave 1 at the pair’s Fader Fort performance Thursday night.
The self-proclaimed “Lords of Funk” use their charm and disco tunes to bring the house down. The bar may be closed come showtime, but the silly and now inebriated crowd takes over the dance floor. High kicks and groovy mosh pits flood the tent as everyone collectively engages in the music.
Hearing so many of Chromeo’s hits is ultimately satisfying. Just to give the audience a taste of something new, they touch on a song from their latest album White Women. Their new single, “Jealous (I Ain’t With It) is a crowd-pleaser. They stay true to form – synth poppy funk dance songs that are catchy as can be.
To the crowd’s dismay, Chromeo only plays a handful of songs before exiting. The premature end to the set naturally upsets the unprepared crowd enough to cause some beer can tossing and cheering “Chromeo OOOOH!” The funk masters are not willing to let the night end too soon, so they return quickly and rock the room with their classic “Needy Girl.”
Over ten years of stage presence and these two are not taking any breaks. Singer Dave 1 and electro-funk genius P-Thugg provide one of SXSW’s best showcases so far. They are about to embark on their Come Alive tour starting this spring. Preorder their album and keep up with tour news at Chromeo.net.
