Lines formed down a crowded alleyway towards Red 7’s outdoor patio. The host, Hologram Kizze, prepared the crowed for a night full of dancing before introducing the man of the hour–The Hood Internet. The crowd went going crazy the moment The Hood Internet took the stage. He played remixes of Drake’s “Started From the Bottom,” Tyga’s “Rack City,” Modest Mouse’s “Float On” and tons more, keeping all audience members intrigued. The light show was vibrant, and the beats kept heads bobbing and hips shaking. Towards the end of his set, he invited up so many of the opening acts that the stage was a pit full of rappers going at it. The crowd was singing along and jumping to the beats The Hood Internet was bumpin’.
By the time intermission came around, the crowd stayed pumped for Chance the Rapper thanks to a Michael Jackson playlist. Chance is known for being a Jackson fan, so the fans responded positively to the personalization of the show. When the lights dimmed and the heavy bass erupted from the speakers, the crowed roared welcoming Chance the Rapper to the stage. His set started at 1 a.m. sharp, and he played many of his hits, many coming from his second mixtape, Acid Rap. The fans jumped and waved their hands in the air from beginning to end. Chance interacted with them by getting them to sing along or jump on cue.
About 20 minutes after the performance started, the show paused. Chance stated that the fire marshals were trying to shut down the show. The crowd thought it was a joke and cheered. Less than three minutes later the venue security announced the show was getting shut down for real. The cheering immediately turned to booing. Chance dropped his microphone and disappeared from the stage. Still in denial, the crowd stayed and chanted “WE WANT CHANCE!” Once the shutdown was announced again, the chants changed to “fuck you!” The crowed was obviously displeased and people stormed out of the show with disgruntled attitudes.
Chance’s one night in Austin didn’t necessarily go as many had hoped, but for the initial 20 minutes, the power packed, high energy show made an impact on fans. It’s safe to say that it was a night that won’t soon be forgotten (for better or for worse).
