Too Short For Eternity
Grey Gersten is everything and anything you could want out of Brooklyn and that’s not, at all, a bad thing. Gersten and the rest of Eternal Lips are a bunch of pop junkies, sampling the best of both coasts. Their self-titled EP is both serene and contemplative, all the while employing non-traditional synth sounds to create something rather fresh and unsettling.
“Dream Hesitate” sounds like a slowed-down Darwin Deez, using cutesy guitars and bloopy keyboards. The sounds use just enough bitrate to not sound retro. Rather, Gersten and guest crooner Sharon Van Etten sound like a duo from this era. Nothing more. Nothing less. Songs like “Dance” and “Wreck” have a darker, more industrial synth sequence. One can hear the Joy Division and New Order influences spilling out of the programmed drums.
“What Are You Makin?” is actually a dialogue between two people, waxing poetic while one is chopping something with a knife. No, really, it’s just a recording of two people talking. This kind of interlude is usually put in the middle of a full length album.
“The Voice” closes Eternal Lips, sporting what sounds like whatever was playing in any car in Miami Vice at any time. The big city “cool” of this track definitely sets the tone for an LP. Wind whipping through your hair, shades on and the top down is the only way to enjoy “The Voice.” One must think, has Gersten found his own “voice” in a sea of other Duran Duran followers? Possibly. We’ll just have to wait.
