Oren Bloedow and Jennifer Charles of Elysian Fields announce a new album entitled “Last Night on earth”, their first U.S release in 10 long years
The songs, which are hauntingly dark, are difficult to define as they hover between styles. It does seem that there is a failed attempt here to mimic the sexually charged and erotic feel of Charles work with Patton in the trip hop project “Lovage”, in which she shined. This is due to the fact that it was not all her, as her voice by itself wears on the listener quickly. From this comparison it falls very, very short. The album certainly takes from the influences of others, think Fiona Apple just to name one. In some of the best musical moments the vocals of Charles leave you wanting, such as in “Sweet condenser” with its Eastern melodies, a challenging experiment as she fails in her attempt to fully support these complex melodies. Perhaps my definitions and yours will differ and you will absolutely love it!
