Natalie Merchant, (10000 Maniacs) one the most celebrated and uncompromising alternative artist to come out of the 80’s, will release her sixth album of original material in nearly 13 years.
The self-titled record, available on May 6th, 2014 is self-produced. It follows perhaps her strangest project to date, 2010’s Leave Your Sleep and 2003’s House Carpenter’s Daughter, an album composed of folk songs. For this project, Natalie reunites with former musicians adding woodwind and brass instrumentation for a more dramatic effect. The album is bittersweet, born from more than 10 years of songwriting focusing on observations of both the pain and pristine happiness encountered in life, “by experience and keen observation,” dealing with issues of “love lost and gained, regret, denial, surrender, greed, destructiveness, defeat, and occasional triumph.” The album is available for preorder at nonesuch.com and arrives with an exclusive print autographed by the artist.
