The Hollywood Bowl Announces 2014 Summer Concert Series Featuring Janelle Monae, Glen Hansard and More

Ah Summer, when the days are long, the nights are warm, and a “polar vortex” is only a novelty cocktail. Yes, Summer – when American and international stars alike descend on LA to rock the hell out of the Hollywood Bowl. Read on for details.

“Iconic” is the first word that comes to mind when you start talking about the Hollywood Bowl. The distinctive, band-shelled venue is about to enjoy its 93rd season. Those 93 years have brought music’s best and brightest to the Bowl. Artists from John Williams to Elton John to the Beatles has played there, and it’s time to add a few more names to the list.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic will be Summering at the Bowl as always, and have a revolving door of respected performers, including Yo-Yo Ma and Leonard Slatkin. However, this is MxDwn, and we’ll be talking about some slightly different acts…

Gladys Knight, aka the Empress of Soul, seven time Grammy winner will be performing alongside Kool and the Gang, in case you’re in need of an old-school fix. And if that’s not enough nostalgia, then the Bowl has you covered. This year represents the 50th year anniversary of the Beatles first performance at the Bowl, a milestone celebrated by a full retrospective concert.

John Legend will also head down to LA for a special performance of Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On. Guitar legend and talk box maestro Peter Frampton and recent rock and roll hall-of-famer Buddy Guy have a double act planned. We mentioned international stars – Ireland’s Glen Hansard will be making the Bowl, as will Scandinavian power axis Royskopp & Robyn.
