mxdwn PREMIERE: With Beating Hearts (Colleen D’Agostino) “Drag Me Down” from The Wolves

The Material’s Colleen D’Agostino is striking out on her own into the lush soundscapes of retro 80’s electro-pop and she’s invited us along for the ride. Check out the first single from her upcoming EP, The Wolves, which will be released under her alias, With Beating Hearts.

While known primarily as the vocalist for the California-based rock outfit The Material, D’Agostino is exploring her fondness for synths and pop hooks on her new solo venture.

I have been working away at my solo project and ‘The Wolves’ EP for the past year and I am so excited to finally share it with everyone. I think I was itching to break away from the rock world for awhile and it felt good to tap into the electronic pop side of myself. I think these tracks really captured the 80s child in me.

D’Agostino has previously collaborated with notables like Blake Harnage and Deadmau5, the latter collaboration being the best-titled song of the year, “Drop The Poptart”. EDM collaborations aside, her debut EP, in the guise of her alter-ego, With Beating Hearts, will be released February 4.

The first single, “Drag Me Down”, hopefully reflects the direction of the album’s remainder with its dense and heavy-hitting intro followed by more sparse and reflective interludes. Though her 80’s influences are apparent, she cuts through with more contemporary vocal inflections and melodies. She says of the song:

Drag Me Down is a song about the decision to stick to your guns and not change yourself for other people. I think the music has a really edgy electro-pop feel to it. Sort of an eighties throwback, but with a futuristic vibe. The song means a lot to me, it’s a reminder to myself as well as an anthem to everyone out there to stay true to yourself.
