80’s era Dylan isn’t the first thing to come to mind when the subject of compilation albums comes up, but that’s exactly what this slew of esteemed musicians intend to cover. The result, Bob Dylan In The 80’s: Volume 1, is due for release March 25.
Producers Jesse Lauter and Sean O’Brien have wrangled together an impressive list of musical guests to cover material that stretches from 1980’s Saved (the second of his evangelical gospel albums) to 1990’s Under the Red Sky. Says Lauter of the source material:
80s Dylan is by no means a celebrated period in his career. It was, in fact, the lowest point of his commercial success even though he released eight studio albums. Our goal was to showcase one of the greatest artists of our time during an off-rhythm period and bring a stronger sense of harmony to the material at hand. Sean and I did everything we could to make this album flow together sonically as if you were listening to a concept album.

The full release is currently available for pre-order, but will not be unleashed fully until March 25. Notably, portions of the proceeds from this album will benefit Pencils of Promise, a non-profit aimed at increasing educational opportunities in the “developing world”.
