Punk supergroup OFF! is gearing up to drop a their second full-length studio album. Wasted Years is set to show up this April. Experience and innovation meet. There may be some veterans behind the album, but they’re trying some new tricks in the studio.
No one really likes the term “supergroup”, but there’s no denying that that’s what OFF! is. The four members are alumni of legendary hardcore punk acts – Black Flag, Burning Brides, Rocket from the Crypt, and Red Kross are all household names in the genre. While their eponymous debut album largely flew under the commercial radar, it did win itself near-universal critical acclaim. And a 7 from Pitchfork, which is sort of the same thing. They laid low for a bit after their first release, only streaming new material from the GTAV soundtrack earlier in 2013. And now, the new album cometh.
Wasted Years promises to be another scorcher. Self-recorded and largely unprocessed, the album is meant to be a direct, honest impression of the band. Songs were recorded as quickly as they were written, and were kept unedited. Time will tell if the process paid off, but the band is convinced that they’ve captured punk at its most classically ferocious.
