In company of Flaming Lips’ members Wayne Coyne and Nathan Roberts, Nirvana’s frontman payed a visit to punk-rock legend GG Allin.
Back in the day there was a time when Nirvana toured with Flaming Lips (pretty awesome line-up if you ask me). The stories behind this match can be found in the new book Staring at Sound: The True Story of Oklahoma’s Fabulous Flaming Lips, as part of rock and roll history, the book explains the context of this meeting.
After a show in Michigan, Cobain asked both band members to come with him to visit GG Allin, confined at the state prison where he was recently arrested for indecent exposure and assault. In the most GG Allin style, the punk rocker cursed and called the LIPS members “Just a couple of Kansas City faggots who want their dicks sucked” as communicated by alternativenation . Reportedly, he also spit at them, just to top it all.
Considered by many the most extreme and spectacular punk rock act ever, GG Allin was the face of anarchy itself. With lyrics that border on plain madness to live performances where defecation and self-mutilation were the normal, the suicidal/psychotic character brought true anarchy and chaos to music and to a scene that he felt was way too attached to corporations and stereotypes. Not surprisingly, Allin died of an accidental heroin overdose in June 1993.
