Singer-songwriter Nicole Atkins has a new song, “Girl You Look Amazing,” now available for streaming.
The track is from Atkins’ forthcoming third album, Slow Phaser, which is set to drop February 4, 2014. She is releasing the album on her own fledgling label, Oh’ Mercy!, with the help of her fans who raised money via a PledgeMusic campaign.
About the track, Atkins said:
This song actually came to me in a dream. It was being played in a big dance club and David Byrne was singing it. I woke up and recorded it into my phone. It took a while to figure out what “girl you look amazing,” could mean as I’ve never been one to be that positive. So I wrote it about a girl who is the last one to shut the party down. Who’s life is just an absolute mess. She might look amazing but she misses all the real things that used to make her happy.
In addition to launching a label and recording a new album, Atkins has performed in a tribute to singer-songwriter/producer Scott Walker and re-creation of The Band’s farewell performance “The Last Waltz” – the event was appropriately titled The Complete Last Waltz. In those two instances she joined artists such as Bright Light Bright Light, Adam Green of the Moldy Peaches, Nels Cline of Wilco and Alec Ounsworth of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! to name a few.
