Get Ready to Be Ejecta-ed
With their first album release, electro-pop duo Ejecta are telling the world they’re ready to show off their chops. With a bold and totally not-safe-for-work album cover depicting singer and Neon Indian member Leanne Macomber nude,Dominae is surely going to make a splash. The duo’s second half, Joel Ford of Ford & Lopatin, is sadly not depicted in his birthday suit, but he helps to create an album definitely worth taking a listen to.
Simply put, the album is fantastic. In more complicated terms, Ejecta provide some solid pop that makes you bob your head and tap your foot and dance around your apartment in your underwear when the roommates are gone. Some of the synth borders on resembling cheesy adventure film scores from the ’80s, but that’s never a turn-off. Combined with some well-timed “clap, clap, claps” and Macomber’s voice, which sounds as if it were a cross between Debbie Harry and Florence Welch, no track on the album does any real wrongs. Dominae is bookended with two great tracks—”Mistress” and “Temptress.” “Mistress” is upbeat and gets you excited for what’s to come. “Temptress” is the same, ending the album on a high (musical) note. Both include some righteous claps and drunken karaoke lyrics for a post-break-up girls night out… or a dude’s night out (we all have feelings). Another must-listen is the heartbreaking “Eleanor Lye,” that further proves that if your name is Elenore you’re pretty much destined to have a depressing, poignant song written for you at some point (Listen to The Turtles’ song if you haven’t already).
Dominae is a fantastic debut for Ejecta and a must-own record for everyone’s collections. The album is easily accessible and creates a fun atmosphere for the listener. With Christmas just around the corner, what could be a better stocking stuffer for the music lover in your life (even if you’re the only one)?
