Thrash Assault
Kill Division are a three-piece thrash metal band that hail from the Netherlands, founded in late 2012. For a band less than a year old, they have reached remarkable success. With no releases to their name, the band has earned a spot on the Metal Blade roster for their debut full-length, Destructive Force. Not only that, but they’ve even been able to get their music pressed on beige marbled vinyl, limited to only 150 numbered copies worldwide. Surely, this is an accomplishment most small bands can only dream of. Their debut, at the very least, is a successful accomplishment marked by an aggressive brand of thrash metal.
To start off, Destructive Force doesn’t have much to complain about. The songwriting is organized, the music well-played, the production is crystal clean, and each musician demonstrates mastery of their instruments. To be honest, the most negative aspect about this full-length is that there’s not much originality to be found. However, it’s a negative aspect that doesn’t overpower the music. After all, it could very well be that the band is just aiming to keep traditional metal alive, which is much better than creating a failed experiment. That said, they appear to have a subtle, distinct sound in the music, combining elements of thrash, death, and grind.
The album is marked by lightning fast blast beats, harsh death/black metal vocals, and thrash-y death metal guitar riffs. “Made of Lies” is a track that is especially memorable, because the guitar riffs are quite catchy. “Master Manipulator” is another track to highlight as it features key, old school thrash metal riffing that is perfect for head-banging. The closing track, “Toxic World,” is perhaps the strongest track and it’s especially aggressive, with very prominent screams and a passionate guitar solo.
All in all, Kill Division have gotten off to a great start in their discography. Though it may not be the greatest release of 2013 or even the most interesting, the band have released something decent and have created a great start for their musical career. Giving Destructive Force a listen is definitely recommended.
