Damon Albarn filled in for BBC 2 Radio host Dermot O’Leary over the weekend, and released an unheard track by Gorillaz entitled “Whirlwind.”
The lead singer and songwriter for Gorillaz, as well as the band Blur, interviewed Idris Elba as well as The Clash’s Paul Simonon on the show, then released a track recorded during the 2010 Plastic Beach sessions. It was recorded with the Syrian National Orchestra in Damascus, and is a 90 second bizarre orchestral piece that is true to the Gorillaz’ unique and varied style. Sadly, Albarn stated that due to the Syrian uprises, he has lost contact with several of those he knew, and dedicated the song to them. Fans will be happy to hear the song after rumors of Gorillaz desolving were quelled by both Albarn and co-founder Jamie Hewlett.
