The first EVER YouTube Music Awards will take place on November 3, 2013! The announcement was made via YouTube video, blog post, and press release. The event will be broadcast live with actor Jason Schwartzman as host and directed by legendary music video producer Spike Jonze. The judging, however, will be up to you.
The video released on YouTube Spotlight channel was of host Jason Schwartzman himself announcing the event.
The YouTube Music Awards will feature performances from industry stars such as Lady Gaga, Eminem and Arcade Fire, who have seen great boosts to their careers thanks to YouTube. The live show will also pay respect to stars that have created their careers because of YouTube, such as violin phenom Lindsey Stirling and experimental video artists CDZA. Broadcasts of performances from all over the world including Moscow, Seoul, London and Brazil, and finishing at New York’s Pier 39.
YouTube is available all over the world and has revolutionized the way music spreads. As stated in the press release, “To celebrate this global music community, the YouTube Music Awards will be powered by the fans themselves. In this first-of-its-kind event, nominations will be announced October 17 based on the videos that the world watched and shared over the past year, and judging will happen in full view as YouTube fans determine the songs and artists honored by sharing across social media.”
YouTube’s VP of Marketing had this to say,
YouTube is home to both established artists and the next generation of musical talent… From catalyzing careers and pop culture phenomena to propelling a song’s rise to #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, our global community’s influence is felt across the music industry. We’re thrilled to celebrate our fans and the music they love with a whole new kind of awards show –the first-ever YouTube Music Awards – judged by you.
This show is truly a social media driven event, and is being created to showcase and celebrate the tremendous achievement this trend has had on global culture, and to show gratitude and give credit to those of us who make artist’s dreams come true, the fans.
