Montreal-based producer, Mike Silver (aka CFCF), has just debuted a track called “Beyond Light” from his new LP, Outside. Listen, inside.
Dropped just last week, “Beyond Light” marks CFCF’s initial release from his new album, Outside – his first full LP since 2009’s beat-driven Continent. The new record is set to hit stores on October 22nd via Paper Bag Records/Dummy, but is currently available for pre-order.
According to a press release, CFCF has spent the last year steering away from sounds that albums like Continent have prompted listeners to expect. Instead the producer has been working on a pair of EPs that explore the hypnotic effects of layered repetition – perhaps a trope we can look forward to hearing on the upcoming album.
Outside also explores the idea of constantly being in motion as “many of the tracks were written while [Silver] was traveling on buses and trains…[and] reflect the yearning for stability that comes from constant movement”. In “Beyond Light”, for example, the melodic line feels restless and repetitive, while the harmonic components seem to seek stability through never venturing from the chord on which the song begins. Artistic intent aside, this track definitely creates its own environment. Have a listen, below.
