Ol’ Dirty Bastard rode again at Rock the Bells, joining Wu-Tang bandmates for a beyond-the-grave performance in San Bernardino, California. ODB’s ghost was up, walking, talking, and singing again, rapping alongside his flesh-and-blood peers in reprises of Wu classics, check the video below for “Shame on a Nigga” and ODB single “Shimmy Shimmy Ya”.
Hologram performances have occurred before, but they’re rare, expensive, and often just sort of strange. Case in point, the Gorillaz, who struggled through a financially draining, technological hiccup-prone holographic world tour. They got it right at the Grammys, but were subsequently stage-crashed by Madonna. Go figure. ODB’s warp-in went smoothly though. All things considered, he looked and sounded great for a guy who died in 2004.
The Wu-Tang clan’s been plenty busy even without the technological showcase. Group member RZA recently released remix of Alt-J’s “Breezeblocks”, and announced a collaboration with Yoko Ono – a move arguably more surprising than ODBs resurrection. The hip-hop collective is also gearing up for a new album, releasing a stream of new material in June.
