From Justin Vernon’s frenzy-inspiring insinuation that Bon Iver might be a thing of the past, to Volcano Choir’s announced presence at several festivals, Justin Vernon fans have been through a lot in the past week.
Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon unintentionally sent fans into nosedive last week after insinuating on Australia’s Triple J Radio that the group might be winding down. Vernon had initially been asked to appear on the show to promote the release of his other project, Volcano Choir’s, new album, Repave. Understandably, however, the host inquired as to the status of Vernon’s other group, at which time Vernon uttered the fateful words:
“I don’t really write songs anymore. The last Bon Iver record was a very ‘sitting down with a guitar and writing’ kind of record… I really have to be in a specific headspace to even begin to illuminate an idea that would create another Bon Iver record, and I’m just not there.”
Since Vernon made that statement, however, both Vernon and Bon Iver’s record lable, Jagjaguwar, have set the record straight: Bon Iver is not dead, and yes, there will be more albums from them in the future. As clarified by Vernon:
“I think I need to take a long time. In the last month or so, I started to get some musical thoughts that agree with the future of what that project can be. I don’t want the big flashing lights and red carpet, like, ‘Here comes another Bon Iver album!’ I just want it to be my bedroom-y thing. But that’ll take a while to figure out.” In conclusion, no, Bon Iver is not done making music, we just might not see another record any time soon.
In regards to Vernon’s current project, Volcano Choir (in addition to the Shouting Matches), the indie rock band has just released their second album, Repave, and is set to appear at several upcoming festivals – including Australia’s Harvest Festival 2013 – while on tour.
