He’s got the whole world in his hands. He, being “Atlas,” the OG world-lifter and subject of Coldplay’s very first soundtrack original and first new song in nearly two years. It’s a twinkling, twisting, metaphysical gumbo.
This is all part of the windup to the second installment in the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games trilogy, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which comes to theaters November 22. So, in a way, the London megaband’s titanic “Atlas,” which floats Christian rock rhetoric atop Greek mythos and that classic, noodly Coldplay piano, bends its knee to the marketing gods while basking in their eternal, merchandising glory. Still, Chris Martin’s raspy murmur is quite nearly pornographic (spoiler alert: “he’s about to explode”), and the reverberating golden ratio buildup to 2:30 (complete with fireworks) gives the track some serious gravitas. Have a looksy and listensy below.
