Primitive Man – Scorn

Otherwise Titled “Not too bad”

From out of nowhere, or maybe Denver, Primitive Man break loose from the doom of crushing comfortable American solitude that is the great Rocky Mountains. Regardless of where these guys are from, the noise from Scorn leads on to a journey to the ever-fabled Death Star, where we await our-–you guessed it-– DOOM!

Unusually, the first track is the title track. At just under 12 minutes, “Scorn” has a unique dizzying quality at the halfway point, which implies specific artistry to their work. Listening beyond the hypnotic delay, we are again projected into a bleak sense of nothingness.

“Rags” provides much more depth to the sound of doom and sludge, which is nicely transcended by the finale of “Scorn.” Placing “Black Smoke” between “Scorn” and “Rags” would have been more effective to keep the story going in a fluid audio format. While this band has many things going for them, at this point track placement is not one of them. The record arrangement and mixing could use some work too.

As a fair warning, “Black Smoke” and “I Can’t Forget” are NOT recommended listening if you have recently acquired any new ‘recreational devices.’ You have been warned! Sever hallucinogenic suicidal attempts may be contemplated.

If you need something really angry but don’t want the possibility of obliterating any expensive material, listen to “Antietam.” With blaring lyrics like “You’re all shit!” it’s pretty clear where they were going with this one, and you can let it all just happen for you. With decent vocals, and well-worked instruments, Primitive Man defiantly bludgeons us with some thorough death metal mixed in with all that doom and noise.

Primitive Man is worth looking into if anyone wants a new dark metal band to follow out to shows and stalk on the road. Buzzwords for the Metalheads; Scorn is: Heavy, Dark, Massive and Brutal.
