First Game of Thrones and now Boardwalk Empire? The Nationals frontman Matt Berninger revs up the retro songsmithy, turning the dial to 1925 for HBO’s prohibition-era drama.
Way back in the Roaring Twenties, Isham Jones and the Ray Miller Orchestra topped the charts with “I’ll See You In My Dreams,” back when blocks of grape concentrate were sold with the warning: “After dissolving the brick in a gallon of water, do not place the liquid in a jug away in the cupboard for twenty days, because then it would turn into wine.” Berninger’s modern rendition features his lusty cooing amid the tasteful—and period appropriate—accompaniment of Vince Giordano And The Nighthawks. Boardwalk Empire Volume 2 is chock-full of prohibition-era tunes covered by artists such as Neko Case and St. Vincent. It comes out September 3.
