LISTEN: Death Grips Release Stream of First Music Since Lollapalooza Controversy Titled “Birds”

In what continues to be the strangest sequence of events in music, Death Grips have now released a track that makes little sense and seems to offer no kind of apology for the punk-rap group’s recent actions.

While a new page was turned in July, when Death Grips broke with Epic Records and announced they were launching their own record label, Thirdworlds, nothing but bizarre events have transpired with the band since. They failed to show up at Lollapalooza after party they were scheduled to play, and at the event, Death Grips music played from an iPod while an enlarged suicide note hung from the ceiling. Fans ended up destroying their equipment once the set’s cancellation was announced, and in later days it was revealed the strange setup “was the show”, in Death Grips’ minds.

Many show cancellations followed, and confusion continues over what the band is hoping to accomplish with everything that’s happening. Last night they released a stream of a new song, “Birds”, and with the repeated lyric of “fuck you”, it feels like quite an angry outlash, but to what is anyone’s guess. Here’s hoping the next move by the avant garde trio is one that sheds more positive light on all that’s gone down.
