Bret Mckenzie of Flight of the Conchords is gearing up for a new musical. The untitled project is said to be a musical inspired by the 1980’s film, Labrynth as well as Jim Henson’s The Muppets.
Even though the New Zealand musical-comdedy duo’s HBO show was short lived, Flight of the Conchords are continuing to excite and entertain fans. The duo recently announced show dates in New York City August 17th – 19th, and if that wasn’t exciting enough, Bret McKenzie has an adventurous new project in the works.
Back in 2011 Mckenzie spoke with TotalFilms.com revealing Jim Henson inspired musical comedy was on the horizon. It’s been a year since McKenzie and musical partner Jermaine Clement released the Flight of the Conchords benefit track and video “Feel Inside (And Stuff Like That)”. Since the video McKenzie has received critical acclamation for his work as music supervisor on the new Muppets series, including taking home the Oscar for his category. In addition to his work with The Muppets, McKenzie also managed to work in a role in The Hobbit. With all of these high-profile projects, it appears Bret is gearing up for his own new creative endeavor; A musical comedy he will be scoring and writing with inspiration from The Princess Bride, The Muppets, and the 1980’s film Labrynth.
“I’m in the middle of a script for a kind of—it hasn’t got a name yet but it’s a fairy tale comedy musical, sort of akin to Labyrinth or something like that,” McKenzie stated.
Once the March 2014 release of Muppets Most Wanted is underway, we can expect to hear more news on the fantasy, musical comedy, that is Bret McKenzie’s long-time dream.
