M.I.A. Threatens To Leak Her Album Next Week If Interscope “Takes Longer”

In a series of Tweets earlier today, one of the “World’s Most Influential People” according to Rolling Stone, M.I.A. has threatened to leak her new album, Matangi next week and says she could make a brand new album by the time they are ready to release.

Frustration has been growing for the artist, as Interscope Records has delayed release of her fourth album four months now. Due to release in April, the record company delayed the release, claiming the sound was “too positive” and asked M.I.A. to “darken it up a bit,” as she explains in an interview with Australian site Gold Coast.

In the series of Tweets the artist posted from before her concert in Japan, M.I.A. called out Rolling Stone regarding a misunderstanding in a recent interview, and then reached out to her fans regarding her frustration with her record label postponing Matangi, leaving for a sound check, and then returning with the controversial Tweet regarding leaking the album.

The delays in the release of Matangi are not the only frustrating events to afflict the artist this year. Her documentary featuring Kanye West and Diplo was cancelled early last month after the director quit. The documentary was set to be released before M.I.A.’s festival tour and the release of Matangi, however, leaked teasers from the director created copyright infringement issues and delays in the marketing efforts for the album’s release. When confronted via e-mail, the director quit and posted the interaction on his Tumblr page.

Matangi already has two songs released as singles and the album has not even come out yet. June saw the release of the single and video for “Bring the Noize” and July saw the release of “Only 1 U.”

Fans will have to wait with bated breath to see if next week truly brings a leaked version of Matangi, or if M.I.A. will continue to wait for Interscope to finally release her now even more highly anticipated album.
