The music world sees it’s share of last minute cancellations, but the activity surrounding Death Grips over the past week have been nothing short of bizarre. Several venues recently have had the band cancel their shows, including the recent Lollapalooza after party, where instead of the band showing up, prerecorded music was played to the backdrop of a suicide note.
Chicago’s Bottom Lounge was supposed to host the noise-rap crew during an official after party following day one of Lollapalooza on Friday, August 2. The band, however, didn’t show up. Fans were furious and destroyed the drums set up on stage that were supposedly Zach Hill’s, but are now being reported as merely child’s practice kit. Now, it seems as though the entire thing was intentionally set up. According to DNA Info,
Death Grips’ management repeatedly told Bottom Lounge employees the band “was on their way, only to be told by the same tour manager that the stage set up and the Death Grips album being played ‘was the show,'” said Erin O’Neal, marketing director for Bottom Lounge. “It appears to us that despite having a signed contract, they never intended on performing last night and instead wanted to leave a room of disappointed fans.”
A similar stunt was supposedly going to be pulled at the Royale in Boston last night, Aug. 6. According to Vanyaland.com, a promoter for the band’s show revealed that “fans of the band would be treated to a giant suicide note displayed on stage, a single drum set up, and one of the band’s handlers backstage pressing “play” on prerecorded music.” The band reportedly wouldn’t be absent from just the show, but never show up in Boston at all.
After learning of the events from Lollapalooza and Boston, Death Grip’s performance in New York scheduled for tonight has been cancelled by the venue itself.

The actions of Death Grips keeps getting stranger, as they have cancelled several more shows on their tour. Including the one in Boston last night and big show in Baltimore on Friday. Following Saturday’s Lollapalooza cancellation, a public relations rep for the band reported “Management and band MIA still,” according to the Chicago Tribune.
There are still dates that have not been cancelled in their ongoing tour, including FYF Fest in Los Angeles on August 25, which they posted on their Facebook page Sunday. With regards to the cancellations, nothing has been mentioned on the band’s page other than recent picture of the destroyed drums from Friday’s enraged fans.
