British industrial pioneer Gary Numan will release a new album, Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind),in mid October of this year. It will be the first album of original material he has released in seven years.
Splinter is Numan’s twentieth album in a career that has thrived for over forty impressive years. Though he has released new material, this is the first collection of originals since 2006’s Jagged. As to why the album took seven years to make, Numan sites a handful of factors: writers block, the demands of parenting three children, and both his and his wife’s battles with depression. In an interview with Stereogum, Numan said of the writing process, “The album has gone from being something that I was terrified to start to being something that I’m extremely proud of, so it’s a fantastic kind of end result for me. But the first few years were really difficult. I was on anti-depressants for three years, and all that horrible stuff. I’m glad all that’s gone because that was no fun at all.”
Numan also said a move from the UK to Los Angeles lifted his spirits and got the ball rolling on the LP: “These days everything’s cool and very positive. We’re living here in California and everything’s great and the kids are healthy and we’ve come through it brilliantly, I think. But nevertheless as food for creativity it was… it’s strange, but it’s fucking excellent actually.”
Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind) is out October 15th in the US and 14th everywhere else on Numan’s own Machine Music label. He will be on tour with Nine Inch Nails, whose guitarist Robin Finck contributed to the album, from August through November. For more information on the album and tour dates, visit his official site.
