From Dickey Betts, to revealing his guitar playing tactics, Dean Ween gets personal on Guitar Moves. Describing Jimmy Page as one of his “favorites of all time”, Ween goes in depth about his influences and how he has incorporated multiple styles into his own music.
With talks of solo album and collaborations with Moistboyz, Ween has set aside some time from his busy schedule to talk music and jam out on Guitar Moves.
“Everything I play is either a variation of Maggot Brain, or Blue Sky,” says Ween, as he shows Guitar Moves host, Matt Sweeney how he initiates his guitar solos. He jokingly speaks of his journey as an artist, describing moments when things did not go as planned, and also mentioning funny and refreshing times as a musician. He speaks very personally of “the shack”, which is where the interview takes place. This shack is not only where Ween made music, but also where he spent most of the last seven years.
In an attempt to give guitar lessons, Ween passed on a vital tip that was given to him when learning to play. “When you wear your guitar, it either goes below your [groin], or over your [groin], like George Harrison; but [it] never covers your [groin].”
“I have two variations that I play in. I have the happy thing, and I have the angry thing,” says Ween, as he talks about his mentality when playing, and how he conveys his emotions to fans. Ween’s humor and easy going nature can be heard, simply by listening to him improvise on the guitar. His sense of comfort in his instrument aids in understanding him as a musician as well as an individual in the music industry.
