The heavy-hearted subject of The White Buffalo’s new concept album was revealed today via the premiere of blues epic, “Joey White.”
You might have heard him first on Sons of Anarchy or Californication, where the bunned-and-bearded White Buffalo’s (née Jake Smith) growling vocals provide dark commentary to the circumstances on screen. Called “an amazing storyteller” by NPR’s All Songs Considered, The White Buffalo describes his new album, Shadows, Greys, and Evil Ways, as “a love story,” following the life of Joey White, who leaves the girl he loves to go off to war and then struggles to readjust upon returning home. The beginning is their meeting, and because of his need and want to support her, he goes off to war, which starts his downward spiral.” The new track is at once metered and menacing, described by the composer on Entertainment Weekly: “This song follows Joey’s whirlwind military experience, starting with joining, training, and the chaos of combat and war. He’s shot and sent home a changed man.”
