Trust is Love. Love is Trust.
London-based band Treetop Flyers have their own unique sound. It lands somewhere between contemporary folk, country, and ’70s California rock. The band has taken the stage with the likes of Bob Dylan and Van Morrison and have also appeared at SXSW to an enthusiastic young crowd. Although they’ve been together since 2009, the five-piece band only recently released their debut album The Mountain Moves.
Opener “Things Will Change” is a fine example of said unique sound. Not fully embracing Treetop Flyers’ vintage inspiration, the track is welcoming and light and prominently features both acoustic and electric guitar. Following track “Houses Are Burning” is where it sounds more washed out and like a song from forty years ago.
The unique vocals in “Storm Will Pass” resulted from a simple computer glitch on the last night of recording the album and the band, intrigued by the space-like sound, decided to stick with the vocals Tomer Danan (also the drummer and only American in the band) recorded.
The final track “Is It All Worth It” is a pretty song that wraps up the album’s lyrical theme of “keep on truckin’” and making the most out of every situation by questioning and reflecting on the past: “Is it all worth it, I hear you say / Last night you seemed so far away / And is it all worth it in the end, my friend?”
While 4/5 of the band are British, Treetop Flyers recorded The Mountain Moves among the rolling hills and beaches of Malibu at Zuma Sound because the music “makes sense there.” And it’s true. The crisp guitar matched with Reid Morrison’s soulful vocals and a twangy vintage sound does remind you of the dusty mountainous roads of Southern California.
