Spanish dance-pop group Delorean have announced the release of their upcoming LP, Apar. The video for the album’s first single, “Spirit,” was made available yesterday on YouTube.
Apar is the much anticipated follow up to Delorean’s acclaimed 2010 album, Subiza. The Barcelona band has received quite a bit of attention in the last few years, remixing songs by The xx and Cold Cave, and touring with other dance musicians like Miike Snow. Apar, says lead vocalist/bassist Ekhi Lopetegi, is their “big production album.” The newly released single, “Spirit,” is an epic and uplifting European alternative dance track with a healthy dose of 80’s pop thrown in for good measure.
The cross imagery on the album’s cover is inspired by Basque artist Jorge Ortega. He built similar tombstone crosses from wood which were then thrown into the sea in Northern Spain. Apar, a Basque word for “froth,” seems to have some post-mortem themes running through it. In one song, “Dominion,” Lopetegi sings, “Death shall have no dominion,” a quote from Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. The floating crosses echo that statement of death’s powerlessness and the exploration of mortality.
Apar will be released on September 9th in Europe, and 10th in the U.S. Purchase “Spirit” on iTunes now, and pre-order the album from the band’s label, True Panther Sounds.
