MGMT Announce New Self-Titled Album Set for September 2013 Release

Indie pop duo MGMT is planning to release a self-titled third studio album on September 17 of this year.

Founders of MGMT Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser want to push the boundaries of pop music with this album as they have in the past, with 2008’s Oracular Spectacular and 2010’s Congratulations. This album led to experimentation with in-studio writing processes and tracks that express the duo’s surrealist views. MGMT also features a cover of “Introspection” by 1960s psych band Faine Jade.

On Record Store Day in April, the band released the album’s opener, “Alien Days,” on a limited edition cassette single. The song was called “a sumptuously detailed, exquisitely zonked-out space-rock construction” by Spin.

MGMT is working on visual elements to accompany the music via “the Optimizer,” which will be part of an enhanced album package. They are shooting music videos for some of the songs this summer as well, and are currently on tour.
