You can now stream the track “Avalanche (Slow)” from the upcoming Zola Jesus album, Versions.
Nika Roza Danilova, more commonly known as Zola Jesus, decided that she wanted to work with a classical composer upon being asked to perform at New York’s Guggenheim Museum. Rather than do her standard electronic set, she chose JG Thirlwell to arrange her songs for quartet. There will be nine classic Zola Jesus songs on the album, and one new one, all arranged by Thirlwell. Says Danilova, “Versions is about the bone of the music; taking approximations from past records and turning them inside out.”
Thirlwell, also known as Foetus, has recently been scoring Adult Swim’s “Venture Brothers” series and composing symphonic arrangements for his own project, Manorexia. He has experience in a wide range of music genres, such as big band, orchestrations, abstract electronics and chamber music.
Zola Jesus, Thirlwell and the quartet can be caught on the road this fall, including a stop at Asheville’s Mountain Oasis Festival.
