R.I.P. Joey Covington of Jefferson Airplane

Joey Covington, former drummer of Jefferson Airplane, has passed away age of 67 after a fatal car accident in Palm Springs, California on Tuesday, June 4th.

Police have confirmed that Covington was the only person in the car, and that he was not wearing his seat belt. Covington was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Covington was an accomplished drummer and musician, beginning his career with Jefferson Airplane spinoff band Hot Tuna from 1969 to 1970. He later replaced Jefferson Airplane’s drummer Spencer Dryden in 1970, and remained with the band until 1972. In 1976 Covington co-wrote Jefferson Starship’s 1976 single “With Your Love,” which peaked at Number 12 on the US singles chart. He then went on to tour with various configurations of the San Francisco Allstars throughout the ’80s and ’90s, and performed most recently at a Marilyn Monroe tribute event three days before his death.
