Former drummer of the Nine Inch Nails, Jerome Dillon, has decided to follow-up his 2005 debut solo album, Reminder, with a second album from his project NearLY. See what he said about the upcoming project during a recent interview.
Shortly after leaving the Nine Inch Nails in 2005 for health reasons, Dillon decided to release a personal album with NearLY, a label which consists of Dillon, his management, and a smattering of personnel including Robin Finck, the guitarist from NIN. The album gained a a moderate cult following shortly after its release, but little has been said about an additional album until now.
In a recent interview with Antiquiet reporter Fernando Scoczynski Filho, Dillon discussed his upcoming material, as well as two recently released tracks. The album began when Dillon was scoring the film No One Lives. According to Dillon, the film’s management was having a difficult time licensing music, and ultimately asked Dillon’s management if the composer would be wiling to license a few tracks from Reminder. Instead of using material from his previous record, however, Dillon decided that he wanted to compose two new NearLY tracks with Gretchen King, Gone and Grey, and placed both online for free download when the film was released.
When asked why he decided to release a new NearLY record eight years after the initial album, Dillon remarked, “I’ve been looking for an excuse to get my shit together and stop having an identity crisis, or an artistic identity crisis about what direction I wanted to take.” Dillon stated that until the 2012 film management’s inquiry, he had been having a hard time matching the honesty and authenticity he believes Reminder embodies.
In summarizing his interview with Dillon, Filho asked him what we can expect from him and NearLY in the future:
AQ: Just to wrap things up, what kind of timeline can we expect for new NearLY material, and what else is on the horizon?
JD: The music for an entire new record is done. It’s not done in terms of it being ready to mix and master, but the writing part of it is done. There’s around thirty tracks that I like and I’m confident with in terms them being finished. Some of them are instrumental, and those are the ones that are the closest to completion; also, I’m hopefully working with a new singer here very soon. The focus is to basically build the thing back up from scratch, from ground zero. There’s a possibility, if we can get something done quickly, that there can be an EP released, as a free download, to let people know we’re still around. The other thing that I’ve been kicking around is releasing the entire score, or most of it, for Officer Down, because I own it outright, and I’m probably going to license it to a company for release, or, conversely, I might do the opposite and just give the whole thing away. But, like I said, I’m trying to get the word out. In a best case scenario, I would like to have a new Nearly record or EP out within the next six to eight months.
