Electronic trio Austra will be releasing their sophomore album Olympia on June 18, and have now leaked the track “Painful Life” for their fans hungry for new music.
Following the release of their debut Feel It Break, Austra toured the world with such acts as Gossip, The XX and Grimes. They then commenced to developing the upcoming album, parts of which were influenced by early Chicago house music.
“Painful Like” speaks to those times, when the dance music attribute of house was performed with a live band. And thus, this particular track was recorded live in the studio, without any programming or loops.
Austra vocalist and songwriter Katie Stelmanis explains more on what inspired the new album’s sound:
We are really into dense harmonies and big beautiful melodies, but I also love techno and dance music. I wanted to bring those elements together.
