Hardcore Jeff Mangum fans rejoice, this is actually happening. The since-estranged indie rock band Neutral Milk Hotel has announced that they are officially getting back together and will be performing a reunion tour this fall in addition to plans for 2014 international tour. Neutral Milk Hotel is reuniting after fifteen long years.
Jeff Mangum, the not-so-famed frontman for the psychedelic rock quartet, practically hibernated after the group disbanded in 1999 following the release of their critically acclaimed album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998). In recent years however, Mangum has been making sporadic solo performances and gracing festival line-ups; most notably last year at Coachella.
It was then that NMH was said to be making a full-fledged appearance, but it never happened. Now more than a year removed from the rumored reunion, the group has officially announced dates and venues for their 2013 fall tour. According to Neutral Milk Hotel’s official website, the touring group this fall will consist of the same squad that came together immmediately following NMH’s first studio album On Avery Island (1996); Jeff Mangum, Jeremy Barnes, Scott Spillane, & Julian Koster.
The website also mentions that a portion of all concert proceeds and one dollar from every box set purchased will be donated to Children of the Blue Sky and others in need. While only five shows have been announced so far, the website says there are “more to come.” Check out some classic NMH videos following the tour dates below.
UPDATE: In Pollstar’s exclusive Q&A with longtime NMH booking agent Jim Romeo of Ground Control Touring, he had this to say when asked about why the dates below were chosen for the comeback tour:
People should know that they shouldn’t get discouraged if they don’t get tickets to these few shows”…”There will be some more fall shows announced soon and a much longer and fuller tour planned for 2014 that will span the globe.”
UPDATE 2 (7/31): It appears Jim Romeo was true to his word, as NMH has just unveiled a massive amount of new tour dates that will run from Fall 2013 through Winter 2014. It is notable to mention that no West Coast dates have yet to be revealed, leaving cause for some to speculate a 2014 Coachella experience. While the latter is only speculation at this point, Jeff Mangum’s solo appearance at Coachella two years ago certainly leaves the door open.
