Allegedly, because the pressure to uphold the name became too catastrophic, and because he’d prefer to perform under his own name rather than the band’s, Wolfmother frontman Andrew Stockdale has dramatically claimed to “kill off” the name of the modern rock band. He’s officially putting it to rest and ending a significant era.
This is not exactly surprising. Wolfmother has been performing together since 2005, but due to irreconcilable differences, former bassist Chris Ross and drummer Myles Heskett left in 2008. The band continued on slowly since then, amidst several lineup changes, but Stockdale has seemingly been disillusioned with the direction the band is headed in for a while now. He sheds some light in the following quote.
“For the last three years I’ve performed as Wolfmother, and I don’t feel comfortable about it. Chris Ross, who played bass and keys in the first line-up when we started, he came up with that band name. That name was for me, Chris and [drummer] Myles Heskett. It became Wolfmother. Because of the success of the name, there was pressure then to call yourself Wolfmother. But it felt weird.”
Wolfmother will say their final farewell this month. They supported Aerosmith in Melbourne, Australia, on April 28th.
Meanwhile, Stockdale’s first solo LP, entitled “Keep Moving,” will be released this summer.
