Miss Kittin Calls Again

Electronic scene veteran Miss Kittin is back with Calling From the Stars—a whopping, twenty-three track album being released on wSphere Records. Since she’s been recording and growing in popularity since 1996, Miss Kittin, also known as Caroline Hervé, has a solid fan-base eagerly waiting to sink its teeth into this album.

Most bands bottom out after three or four albums, so it is impressive that after seventeen years Miss Kittin is still releasing albums that sound fresh and energetic. Calling from the Stars definitely has a more mature edge than an album from a younger artist might be expected to have, and there lies all of its charm. Miss Kittin isn’t trying to be young and hip, she’s an artist that knows who she is and makes no apologies for it. In fact, the opening track, “Flash Forward,” features Miss Kittin purring, “The future is bright,” on repeat. For the rest of the album, she effortlessly proves this to be correct.

With twenty-three songs, you could expect today’s short attention-spanned fan to lose interest easily, but Calling manages to keep interest high with its steady rhythms that command at least some easy head bobbing. A highlight comes with the lullaby cover of “Everybody Hurts,” by R.E.M. as well as with the poppy “Blue Grass,” that should become a summer club favorite, if there is any reason left in this old world.

Some might say Miss Kittin is trying to prove her relevance still exists with Calling from the Stars, but after one listen to the record, any listener will know that’s a bunch of crock. The confidence that Miss Kittin exudes through this record will leave everyone sure that the question of relevance has never even crossed her mind. Calling from the Stars will leave you calling for more.
