It’s been 15 years since the debut release of the UK post-punk revival/noise band Clinic. Their 8th studio album, Free Reign II signals a possible new era for a cult band who’s always teetered on the edge of mainstream. It’s a remix album of their 2012 album, Free Reign, in which the loose-lipped lyrics remind us now of The Black Angels and experimental compositions and unusual sounds paint a surreal landscape as the album unfolds. Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) added his assistance to engineering the album and we are left hearing Clinic without a muddled lo-fi blanket but with clear edges and full layers. As far as remix albums go, it’s not entirely different than the original, it hasn’t been turned into an electronic album, and it is pretty damn good.
