Pokey LaFarge looks like he stepped out of a time machine, seemingly plucked from the 1920s and transported to present day. His music is similarly dated, drawing from the rich traditions of early jazz, ragtime and country blues. Somehow, the young St. Louis troubadour manages to make these often overlooked genres seem vital once more, all with the help of his band the South City Three. If you’re looking for a roaring tour through the history of American music, there’s no better guide than Pokey LaFarge.
