The story of Pussy Riot’s famous protest and subsequent arrest will air on HBO in June.
The feminist punk-rock group Pussy Riot made a lot of commotion last year when they staged a “punk prayer” at Moscow’s cathedral Christ the Saviour. The group was arrested for “hooliganism driven by religious hatred” and sentenced to a two year jail term. There has been some optimism as Pussy Riot’s guitarist Yekaterina Samutsevich got her sentence suspended and a book chronicling the incident is in the works. Rolling Stone is reporting the documentary Pussy Riot – A Punk Prayer will be airing on HBO in June. Pussy Riot – A Punk Prayer will follow the band’s story, the arrest and trial. It was directed by Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin who originally premired the documentary at Sundance in January before HBO bought it. Lerner told Rolling Stone the documentary is “one of the stories of the decade…it is feminism on trial.”
