Nicole Atkins, sans band, was making everyone weak in the knees. Her powerful sultry voice has just the right amount of twang, it was enthralling for everyone. If the crowd was sitting, she most definitely would have received a standing ovation. Recalling a story of a magical pick found in a palm tree from the previous night, she said she knew it was going to be a good tour. She was right.
Eels got right to it, rocking everyones socks off with “Bombs Away.” They kept the music coming with very little socializing, other than E giving a different band member a loving hug after each of the first few songs. After “Tremendous Dynamite” the crowd was reminded that Eels can rock “hard like that” or “soft like this” after “In my Dreams”. Recognizing their 10 year anniversary; E and The Chet renewed their “bandmates vows” with Rev. Al officiating and turning Eels “secret” handshake into everyday news. Everyone was faked out with a faux encore, departing the stage very early and coming back making lots of jokes about there being enough time for one more…and maybe another. Their true encore of “Fresh Blood” and “I am Building a Shrine” was nothing short of spectacular. The lights were on and two thirds of the crowd had left the venue; then the music started again. An amazing gift for those who like to linger, the hangers on were treated to “Dog Faced Boy” and a high voltage “Go Eels!” jamming finale.
