DJ Muggs may be best known for the work he’s done with the legendary rap act Cypress Hill, but on his recent release Bass For Your Face, Muggs steps into the spotlight and proves why he is one of the best DJ’s/producers still spinning today. DJ Muggs has been honing his craft for years and his experience shines through on each track of this album. The tracks are arranged perfectly and each contributing artist performs at the top of his game.

“Trapp Assassin” featuring Freddie Gibbs starts off the LP and sets the tone for the eleven numbers that follow. This track is proof that the album’s title wasn’t a threat or suggestion but a promise. Public Enemy front man Chuck D steps up to the mic on “Wickid” and for a moment teleports the listener to an alternative reality where Terminator X doesn’t exist and you begin to wonder how It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back would have sounded through through the eyes of DJ Muggs.

It’s hard to pick a standout song on an album where each one is equally as good as the one that follows, but  “Safe” featuring Belle Humble sticks its head out of the crowd a littler taller than the others. Compared to the rest of the album “Safe” feels like a cathedral in a bad neighborhood. Belle Humble’s voice serves as beacon of hope and the beat that accompanies her just adds to the sense of peace.

DJ Muggs has been a staple in the hip hop community for the last two decades. He has produced and performed with the best in the business and on Bass For Your Face he proves once again why he’s one of the most prolific DJ’s of today. Bass For Your Face is one of those albums that is perfectly titled, and definitely will not disappoint.
