If you are looking to classify Dessa, good luck. On one song you can consider her a rapper; on another, a singer. She’s also a spoken word artist and a writer. Dessa embraces her multi-faceted package. When she gave her latest album, 2011’s Castor, the Twin, to fellow musicians and friends they suggested that she release it as two albums because it was so diverse. She decided to keep it as one. The record is not what you would expect when you think of commercial rap. Adding instruments like vibraphone, stand up bass and viola gives each song a laid back, organic sound that allows Dessa to be front and center. This winter the Doomtree collective member set out on a short tour of the northeast, leaving the chilly lands of Minneapolis. Tomorrow night she stops at World Cafe Live for a special sold out show with local rapper Kuf Knotz opening. Out on the road with her this time is a full live band, bringing that earthy element from the record to the stage. Hopefully you didn’t sleep on this show and were able to pick up tickets because this is one you do not want to miss!
