Former Metallica Member Jason Newsted Creates New Band Newsted, Announces New EP Metal For January 2013 Release

Jason Newsted, the former Metallica bassist, has returned with a brand new band called Newsted and has issued an EP titled Metal via iTunes, out January 8.

Metal features the following four songs:

01. Soldierhead
02. Godsnake
03. King of the Underdogs
04. Skyscraper

Newsted originally joined Metallica in 1986 after the tragic death of Cliff Burton in a bus accident during one of their European tours. Newsted was recruited and was in the band for the next 14 years. Instead of forming his own band, he began playing in a side project called Echobrain, played bass in Ozzy Osbourne’s band, as well as Canadian cyber metallers Voivod. He also took part of the reality television formed Rock Star Supernova, also featuring Dave Navarro (Janes Addiction) and Tommy Lee (Motley Crue) in 2006.

Newsted explained to Metalshrine about the band:

“It is old school…that’s why I named it [Metal], because of the other music I’ve played over time. All the diversity of the players, I don’t wanna make any confusion and I don’t want anybody to not know what’s happening. This is Newsted and it’s me and this is metal.”

In December 2011, Newsted rejoined Metallica as part of their 30th anniversary show. He joined Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler, as well as other former members Dave Mustaine (of Megadeth), Ron McGovney, Lloyd Grant, Hugh Tanner and producer Bob Rock as part of the list of special guests who took part of the event.
