SPIN magazine rang out 2012 with their annual Year in Music Party, where they invite artists who made an impact in the last 12 months to perform a dual showcase. This year, the chosen two were Santigold, who released her sophomore album Master of My Make-Believe in April, and Grizzly Bear, who released their fourth studio album, Shields, in September. Both acts treated a packed audience in New York’s Bowery Ballroom to ten and eleven songs respectively (setlists below).
Santigold was up first and ten songs were just not enough. Complete with a costume change, two dancers and a horse, Santigold’s set included key tracks from both of her albums to launch the evening into an all-out party. Halfway through, she invited audience members onto the stage to dance along to “Creator,” and had just as much fun as the lucky few. As she walked offstage, thanking SPIN for their support on Make-Believe and throughout her career, the cheers barely masked the few complaints her set wasn’t longer.
Grizzly Bear was just as warmly received. Though the small stage was overwhelmed by all of their equipment (seven keyboards!), the band didn’t need much space to capture the room. Leaning mostly on songs from Shields, the band hit every groove and elicited sing-alongs from the audience on nearly every track. While he too thanked SPIN, frontman Ed Droste gave special thanks to the New York audience, happy to celebrate the end of the year welcomed home.
