Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has once again aired out his tough-guy political leanings onstage. Last week the “Peace Sells” singer encouraged fans at the House of Blues in Antlantic City, New Jersey to look up the word, “secede,” citing rumblings of an American secessionist movement on the heels of a divisive 2012 election.
When you go home tonight, I want you to do me a favor. I want you to look up online the word ‘secede,’ OK? Because right now, right now, there are 47 states in the United States of America that wanna secede from the United States of America. And what ‘secede’ actually means is that they don’t wanna have any part with this bullshit anymore. Whether you are a Democract or a Republican or a Libertarian or an Independent or you’re queer, it doesn’t matter. What matters is we’re Americans, and we are not being treated right.”
Later in his crowd-pumping diatribe, Mustaine lamented the recent closing of Hostess Brands, the Irving, TX baking company behind Twinkies and Wonder Bread.
Did you hear that the people that make Twinkies today are going out of business after 82 years? Hostess. No more Twinkies. Although that kind of sounds a little funny, but you know, it’s really sad. It’s an institution—82-years-old institution. They are going out of business because of this bullshit that’s going on right now in the government. And what that means is that means 18,000 more people are going on unemployment, and it’s gonna be your responsibility to pay for them. It’s just not fair, it’s just not fair. One thing that would happen if I was president is I would treat you like you were my own.
The metal musician, whose band is best known for mega-selling albums Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia, has a reputation for showing a punkish political awareness onstage and off. Earlier this year, he suggested before Singapore crowd that both the Aurora, Colorado shooting and Sikh Temple incident were an inside job perpetrated by the US government.
