Following an official release date for How to destroy angels_’ An omen_EP of November 13th and a full length due out in 2013 via Columbia Records, talk about new Nine Inch Nails record has resurfaced and now Trent Reznor has explored the possibility of future live performances.
While he has once again hinted to Rolling Stone about the future of Nine Inch Nails, he has made similar statements ever since Nine Inch Nails stopped in 2009. “All signs point to yes. Yeah, there will be new music. There are some things in the works.”
As for possibilities of Nine Inch Nails touring in the immediate future, he said,
“Yeah, if it feels right, it’s a possibility. I never said that that wasn’t going to happen, just that it couldn’t go on as it was. Having a few years doing other things, I’ve enjoyed [them] and I’m enjoying doing How to destroy angels_, and there will be a place for stuff that falls in the Nine Inch Nails column of things. It’s a different kind of work.”
“Stay tuned. We’ll see what happens here.”
Reznor has continuously dropped hints in interviews that Nine Inch Nails is not over, and instead his focus was on other projects. He has stayed busy recording with How to destroy angels_ his project with his wife Mariqueen Maandig and Atticus Ross. He wrote music for the video game Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 and scored The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo with Ross.
Looking back, he was quoted in an interview with the UK tabloid The Sun at the end of 2011 that Nine Inch Nails was far from dormant, but his energy would be focused on How to destroy angels_ instead.
“It started to feel like if I didn’t force myself into a change I would regret it. It’s a fear of not wanting to try things because you’re in a comfort zone. I always think about my hero David Bowie and his fearlessness to destroy something that isn’t ready to break yet and start something new.”
Also, he had dropped hints on BBC 1 radio interview with Zane Lowe that he had plans on working on Nine Inch Nails in 2012. Even then his statements were vague but sounded like he did not rule out any possibilities of reviving Nine Inch Nails.
“I plan on spending a good portion of this year coming up, writing with that in min.”
So the mystery continues as to when his focus will switch over to Nine Inch Nails and whether a tour and a new recording will ever surface. Stay tuned.
