My Bloody Valentine Guitarist Kevin Shields Announces New Album Coming 2013

Talks about a new My Bloody Valentine appear to become reality before the end of 2012, says vocalist, guitarist and founding member Kevin Shields told NME. The yet to be titled, forthcoming album would be the band’s third full length and their first release since 1991’s Loveless.

Shields said he will be posting the new album on his website, along with a reported EP with brand new recordings due out in 2013.

He commented on the new material, in a statement:

“[It] really frees us up, and in the bigger picture it’s 100% necessary.”

“People who like us will immediately connect with something,” he said. “Based on the very, very few people who’ve heard stuff– some engineers, the band, and that’s about it– some people think it’s stranger than Loveless. I don’t.”

In an interview with Pitchfork, he spoke about the forthcoming release:

I’m just finishing a record that I had started in the 90s. It was going to be, like, the next record. But it was already after the band had half split up, and me and Bilinda [Butcher] were left. Then we got back together. I’ve always said that we were going to make a record again. You never know, we might finish it really quickly, and it might be up in a few months! I tend to work really quickly, suddenly, and I might be willing to do that right now. We’ll see!

My Blood Valentine will be headlining Tokyo Rocks festival in Japan next May, where they are reportedly performing new material.
