A possible connection to deceased BBC television host Jimmy Savile’s involvement with a massive child sex-abuse scandal led to the arrest of former pop star Gary Glitter, best known for his 1972 hit single “Rock and Roll (Part 2).”
Born Paul Gadd, Glitter was first convicted for molesting two preteen girls in Vietnam in 2006. But the 68 year old’s name was tied into Savile’s connection with allegations of sexually abusing roughly 300 children and adolescents throughout his on-air career, which was dubbed by British authorities as “Operation Yewtree.” Savile hosted Top of the Pops and the children’s show Jim’ll Fix It for two decades each until his death in 2011 at the age of 84.
British police have called the one time loved television host as one of the worst sex offenders in recent history. There are reports that Savile used his status to coerce vulnerable girls and boys into having sex with him in the network premises such as dressing rooms, his car and his camper van.
The BBC were reportedly aware of the complains against Savile and Sky News said his family were aware and were also victims of his abuse. BBC One’s investigative news show Panorama first made these allegations public, but BBC Two’s Newsnight investigative show began their own investigative piece about the alleged abuses, but was later shelved.
Glitter has yet to issue a statement in regards to the allegations.
